DMF Comedy Writers Bursary

The Dermot Morgan Foundation, unveiled in Galway during the week-long TedFest and on the 10th anniversary of the comedian's sudden death and launched in Dublin's Vicar Street at "An Audience Without Dermot Morgan", is providing bursaries to help emerging comedy talent in Ireland.

Commenting on the setting up of the Foundation, Dermot's son, Bobby Morgan said: "It's so hard to get started in comedy, as indeed in all manner of producing art. The Dermot Morgan Foundation, will be pioneering, providing the support for young writers to have the time and space to develop their work - a useful weapon against the wolves at the comedian's door"

Dermot Morgan's son Bobby Morgan said he hoped the foundation would allow other comedians to follow in his father's footsteps in his lampooning of those in power. Dermot, he thought, would "encourage people to go the satirical route, not to let the establishment off the hook," he said.

Fiona Clarke, Dermot's partner before he died one day after filming the last episode of Father Ted, said he would have been delighted with the foundation. "He knew all too well the struggle of trying to write, work and feed a family," she said. "I hope that this bursary will give someone that financial boost that can sometimes make all the difference."
